About Me
I feel my purpose is to help people cope with the trauma of being human in these uncertain times. I am innately in tune with the language of emotion. I have an inherent understanding of people’s communication patterns and a gentle, approachable, non-threatening presence that provides people with a safe haven to express their truths. I am a published author with more books on the way.
My Experience
During my 20+ years as an educator, I witnessed closely how early childhood experiences impact development and brain architecture. I taught kindergarten, first grade, special education (children and adults) and art during this phase of my career. I created social and emotional growth programs for children on the autism spectrum. I am currently developing an art curriculum for teachers and parents that encapsulates how I use art to help children cope with PTSD, anxiety, ADHD and dyslexia, as well as provide engaging and non-messy ways to experience creativity and stimulate the right brain.
Therapeutic Approach
I utilize creative expression to bridge language and developmental gaps and to help adults regulate their emotions – especially those working through childhood trauma. As an author, I find value in the practice of writing as a way to process and let go of congested emotions. I have taught writing workshops to teens and adults and have helped many find their voices through creative means. I work with children and parents to help build more cohesive relationships and to teach parents the language of childhood – play.
I feel that behavior is a language children use as their verbal skills and brains develop and it is up the adults to understand this language. All behavior has a reason that deserves exploration and support. If a child lacks appropriate skills to approach certain tasks it is up to the adults to assist in skill development and task modification until the child is better able.
I believe communication is the foundation for healthy relationships and that oftentimes couples and families need a translator to ensure their words are interpreted as they intend. I teach couples and families how to refine their communication styles. When trauma is part of the story, communication can be that much more challenging. I aim to help couples cultivate a safe place to express trauma and to enhance emotional intimacy. I have seen a connection between trauma and chronic illness and empathize with those seeking health. I have walked this path and I learned tremendously. I know what it feels like to have pain dismissed by loved ones and health practitioners when all you want are answers and relief. I hope to support those living with chronic conditions find a more peaceful existence.
I am holistic at heart, humanistic and client -centered. I believe one size cannot fit all people and adapt my approach to those who choose to work with me. I value vulnerability as the most beautiful aspect of a person. I fiercely respect and protect those tender parts of our humanity.
